Happy Lunar New Year!

What year were you born in? According to the Chinese zodiac, your birth year can have some influence on different characteristics of your personality, horoscope, love compatibilty and fortune. It's a fun way to get some insight into what the year has in store! Some of the animals in the zodiac are not favoured in Western culture but they have different connotations in the Chinese zodiac.

This Lunar New, January 29th, ushers in the year of the Wood Snake. People born under the year of the snake are known for their intelligence, wisdom and intuition. The element of wood adds seductive and creative energies as well as cunning and ruthlessness! That's a force to be reckoned with...

The Royal Canadian Mint released some stunning gold and silver commemorative coins for the Year of the Snake. Check out this one, with the inset jade snake!

Lunar New Year is celebrated in numerous countries, under different names. In China it's also called the Spring Festival, in Korea it's known as Seollal, in Vietnam as Tet, in Tibet as Losar. The festival celebrates the arrival of spring and the lunisolar new year - similar to when the Gregorian calendar flips from December 31st to January 1st, but it follows the Chinese Lunar calendar. While every culture does it a little bit differently, traditions include reunions with relatives, staying up late to ring in the new year, eating delicious food and fireworks.  Chinese New Year will be celebrated from January 28th until the full moon Lantern Festival on February 12th.

If you're looking to celebrate in Toronto, the Chinatown BIA has festivities happening on February 1st & 2nd. Find out more here
